“Creating a Community of Practice Around Mentoring”

On May 27 more than 40 representatives from over 30 mentoring programs in six counties, along with a cadre of other professionals working on behalf of mentoring in the region, gathered at the Mentoring Partnership & Resource Center’s first-ever convening of Mentoring Practitioners!  The theme of the morning, “Creating a Community of Practice Around Mentoring” was fulfilled with dynamic speakers and opportunities to learn, network and share best practices.

Advisory Council Member and Temple University Professor Dr. Cheryl Oakman and BBBS SEPA’s Chief Program OfficerJudith Dunson Spangler set context for the work, and MPRC’s Executive Director Abigail Ellis engaged participants in the work planned for the next 12 months. Finally, participants learned about the research of Dr. Mike Nakkula, University of Pennsylvania Professor, national mentoring researcher and Advisory Council member as well as John Harris, Founder and Principal of Applied Research Consulting regarding their work on the ways match characteristics influence outcomes for mentored youth.  Program Agenda and Speaker Bios can be found Here.

Many new opportunities for collaboration were identified, professional networks were expanded, and the seeds were sown for a new community of practice . We hope to see you again in November 2015 as we gather for the second time!
